In 1920, the Nineteenth Amendment was ratified, giving women the right to vote. Sojourner Truth died in 1883 but fought for women, abolition, and for Black women during a time when they were ignored. Grace Lynn Haynes made her debut with The New Yorker with a portrait of Truth to celebrate one hundred years of women's suffrage, and Truth's tenacity to fight for women's rights.
