You plan a picnic and a swim down at the river, glassy and cool, on a sandy red beach where the tall reeds part. You wear a gold lamé cover-up and glitter in the sun like an idol, like an icon, as you lay out olives and bread, honey and oil, kumquats and quince. The musicians of Bremen are there, tuning their instruments over the crowd gathered on calico quilts, laughing and shushing and rubbing warm shoulders against each other. As the sun sets they begin to play, the melody like birdsong, an offering to the sky, the night clouds, the pale curve of moon.
